Casa Del Sol in Ashburton

Cam’s own garden has been a labour of love created over a period of 13 years, but never diverted from his original design or philosophy of a sustainable garden created with locally sourced stone, reclaimed timber and materials with mass plantings of hardy, interesting drought tolerant plants chosen to provide year round colour and texture.

The inspiration behind the design comes from the street names in the surrounding streets that are all named after WW2 aircraft. The wreckage of a reclaimed airplane plus other related salvage take pride of place in the garden, while adding focal points plus elements of surprise.

The living zones of the house are extended into the garden which provides a fire pit lounge area and bocce court. The outdoor cooking zone includes a wood fired pizza oven and Greek spit, protected by a Perspex covered pergola. Two water features in the garden with gently babbling water ensure a relaxing ambiance. This garden was scheduled to be open as part of Victoria’s Open Garden Scheme in March 2020 (postponed due to Covid-19).
